Robert De Niro - Regarded as One of the Greatest Actors in Modern Film 1943-

Robert De Niro

It’s important not to “indicate” [in acting]. People don’t try to show their feelings, they try to hide them.
—ROBERT DE NIRO

Videly regarded as one of the greatest actors in modern film, Robert De Niro hardly seemed a candidate for Hollywood stardom when he was growing up in New York City. The acclaimed acror, director, and producer was born into a family of artists, and his favorite boyhood occupation was reading. T’he pale youngster was so shy and reserved that his peers nicknamed him “Bobby Milk.”
Robert De Niro Jr. was born on August 17, 1943, to Robert De Niro Sr., a Greenwich Village abstract expressionist painter, and Virginia Admiral De Niro, also a painter and later the owner of a typesetting and printing business. Bobby’s parents separated when he was two years old, after which he lived mostly with his mother. His first onstage role was that of the Cowardly Lion in a school production of The Wizard of Oz. As he grew older he got over his shyness and began associating with the street kids in his Little Italy neighborhood. He started taking drama classes at the renowned Stella Adler Conservatory, and at sixteen he dropped out of school with the goal of becoming a professional actor,
De Niro continued his training at the prestigious Actors Studio and studied with the notable acting instructors Lee Strasberg and Luther James. He landed his first film role in Brian De Palma’s Wedding Party (filmed in 1966 but released in 1969). The first picture of DC Niro’s to be released was another De Palma film, Greetings (1968).
De Niro appeared in nine films before his 1973 films Bang the Drum Slowly and Mean Streets drew critical and popular attention. Mean Streets marked the start of a longtime affiliation with director and childhood friend Martin Scorsese. De Niro burst into the limelight in 1974 in Francis Ford Coppolas
The Godfather, PartII, playing the young Vito Corleone. To prepare for his role as the Italian-speaking don—who knows just a few words of English—De Niro learned the Sicilian dialect of the fictional character. Like its predecessor, the film was a smash hit, winning Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. De Niro himself earned his first Oscar, for Besr Supporting Actor.
In 1976 De Niro rejoined Scorsese for the grimly violent film Taxi Driver, costarring a young actress named Jodie Foster as a teenage prostitute. De Niro played the intense taxi driver Travis Bickle, who becomes obsessed with protecting the youngster. His striking performance won htm a Best Actor Oscar nomination. The next year he teamed with Scorsese again as a jazz musician in the musical New York, New York.
The actor returned to his now-trademark character—the intense brooder with an undercurrent of menace—in The Deer Hunter (1 978), securing a second Best Actor Oscar nomination. In 1980 he took on perhaps the most challenging character of his career, gaining an astonishing sixty pounds to transform himself into heavyweight champion boxer Jake LaMotta in the film Raging Bull, The role garnered De Niro his first Best Actor Academy Award, and the film was nominated for eight Oscats, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor (Joe Pesci).
During the 1980s De Niro continued to show his creative range. Among his more successful pictures was The Mission (1986), a historical drama in whicfi he plays a reformed persecutor of Jesuit missionaries in the eighteenth-century South American jungle. The following year, he costarred in The Untouchables as legendary mobster Al Capone. He also appeared in the hit action-comedy Midnight Run (1988) as an irascible bounty hunter determined to turn in a white-collar criminal (Charles Grodin). Other films during this period, such as the mob film Once Upon a Time in America, the romantic drama Falling in Love (both 1984), and the offbeat fantasy Brazil (\ 985) were less successful, but they demonstrated De Niro’s remarkable versatility.
In 1989 De Niro converted a former Manhattan coffee factory into the TriBcCa Film Center and established the headquartets of his new production company, TriBeCa Films. The studio’s first project, the 1989 film We’re No Angels, was a huge disappointment, but the company rebounded and is still actively promoting and funding successful projects.
Aside from a few box-office failures, including Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1994) and The Fan (1996), De Niro turned in a string of consistently fine performances during the 1990s. He received his fourth Best Actor Oscar nomination in 1990 for his portrayal of a coma patient who regains consciousness in Awakenings. That same year, he scored big as part of a Mafia threesome (costarring Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta) in Goodfeltas, and he was a terrifyingly credible psychotic killer in the 1991 remake Cape Fear, for which he got yet another Oscar nomination. In 1993 he made his directorial debut with A Bronx Tale (1993); he also produced and costarred in the picture.
In the sleekly produced crime film Heat (1995), De Niro paired for the first time with Al Pacino (although both appeared in The Godfather, Part II, they’d had no scenes together). He produced and costarred (with Dustin Hoffman) in the wry comedy Wag the Dog (1997); he plays a Washington “spin doctor” who teams up with a Hollywood producer (Hoffman) and “produces” a fake war that distracts public attention from a presidential scandal.
De Niro had a blockbuster in the 1999TriBcCa Films production Analyze This, in which he plays an angst-ridden mob leader. He gave a delightful performance as the comic-strip villain Fearless Leader in The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000) and is a menacingly charming father of the bride m Meet the Parents. In 2001 he cos tarred with Ed Burns in 15 Minutes, and with Edward Norton, Angela Bassett, and Marlon Brando in The Score. Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, he participated in television specials honoring those who died, including America: A Tribute to Heroes, and 9/11, which he hosted.
Robert De Niro’s upcoming film projects include Showtime and City of the Sea. He will also reprise previous roles in Meet the Packers (a sequel to Meet the Parents) and Analyze That (a sequel to Analyze This). Regardless of what De Niro is working on, critics and fans can be certain that he will turn in a smooth, subtle performance, as he has done throughout his career.
