Hanks’s next two films, Dragnet and Punchline, did not do well. But his inspited performance in the 1988 rnovie Big—about a boy who wants to be an adult and wakes up the next morning to find out that his wish has come true-earned him a Best Actor Golden Globe and a Best Actor Oscar nomination. Tom HanksAlthough the next few projects, including Turner & Hooch (1989) and Joe Versus the Volcano (1990), were moderate successes, the badly miscast Bonfire of the Vanities (1990) was a massive failure. Deeply disappointed, Hanks took time off for his family (he and Rita had a son, Chester, in 1990).

In 1992 Hanks took on the role of a drunken ex-baseball star in Penny Marshall’s A League of Their Own, To look the part of the cantankerous Jimmy Dugan, Hanks gained twenty pounds. He didn’t want to confuse this part with the amiable leading man he usually played. “[I]t opened up a lot of avenues for me,” he said of the character. League was a huge success, bringing in more than $100 million.
After costatring with Meg Ryan in Sleepless in Seattle (1993), Hanks accepted a vastly different project: gay attorney and AIDS sufferer Andrew Beckett in Philadelphia. It was the first big-budget film to feature a homosexual character in a lead role and the first to tackle the devastating impact of AIDS. Hanks’s sensitive and powerful performance won an Oscar for Best Actor. In an emotional acceptance speech he spoke eloquently about the millions who had died of AIDS complications. “the streets of heaven are too crowded with angels,” he said. “They number a thousand for each of the red ribbons we wear here tonight. They finally rest in the warm embrace of the gracious creator of us all.”
In 1994 Hanks transformed himself into the slow-witted title character of Forrest Gump and delivered another blockbuster performance. Gump became the fifth-highest-grossing film ever. Hanks himself became only the second actor to earn back-to-back’ Best Actor Oscars. As astronaut Jim Lovell in Apollo 13 (1995), costarring Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton, Hanks delighted in portraying a real-life American hero, an opportunity he saw as “every little boy’s dream come true.” The movie got a handful of Academy Award nominations and two Oscars. He next charmed audiences with the voice-over for Woody the Cowboy in the enormously popular computer-animated Toy Story. Hanks has described this project as one of his most difficult.
Tom worked the other side of the camera in 1996, directing and cowriting That Thing You Do! He took time off to be with his family—-especially son Trurnan, born in 1995- Hanks then teamed up with Ron Howard again to direct and write the extraordinary twelve-part documentary TV miniseries From the Earth to the Moon (1998).
Hanks astounded fans as part of an ensemble cast in Saving Private Ryan (1998), The opening scene—a harrowing reenactment of Allied troops landing in Normandy on D-Day—has been hailed as the most realistic war scene in film history. Like the film’s directors and producers, Hanks aimed to show “not the balletic play-violence of an action picture, but the terrible impact of real bullets.” He wanted to honor the sacrifices of his parents’ generation. The film sent audiences out of theaters weeping—and received five Academy Awards. Hanks and director Spielberg donated $500,000 to build a D-Day museum in New Orleans. Hanks received the U.S. Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award—die services highest civilian honor—-for his work.
Hanks rejoined Meg Ryan in You’ve Got Mail (1998), starred in The Green Mile (1999), and reprised the voice of Woody in Toy Story 2 (1999). He joined Spielberg again for the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers (2001). In 2002 he departed once more from his traditional “good guy” persona as a gangster in Road to Perdition.
Despite enormous success, Tom Hanks remains by all accounts a “regular guy.” His outlook stems from the belief that he is just doing his job, albeit with great enthusiasm. “the only thing that really exists is the connection the audience has with a movie,” he has said.
“No actor has control of that. All you can control is your own passion for doing the work in the first place.”

Tom Hanks - Versatile Actor and Director 1956-

[Movie] characters remind us that we’re part of a greater humanity, and that we can actually affect the world by the choices we make once we leave the theater.
—TOM HANKS
Tom Hanks is one of the most talented and likable personalities in Hollywood. A devoted husband and father and a dedicated actor, he has a reputation for taking on challenging parts, chose that one director calls “the most selfless rolefs].” Indeed, Hanks considers himself fortunate to be an actor.
Thomas J. Hanks was born in Concord, California, on July 9, 1956, to Amos and Janet Hanks. A former navy machinist, Amos was a cook who met Janet when she was a waitress. Their first child, Sandra, was born in 1951; Lawrence (1953), Tom, and James (1961) followed. But by 1961 the Hanks’s marriage had dissolved. Janet took James to Oakland; Amos chased jobs in Nevada and California with the older children. Life grew more bewildering when Amos remarried twice. “By the time I was ten I had had three mothers, five grammar schools, and ten houses,” Tom recalls.
Tom settled into each new situation determined to find new friends. He
became the class clown in every school. In Oakland he developed an interest in the U.S. space program. He used a length of garden hose as a breathing tube and weighted himself down in a swimming pool to sec what being an Apollo astronaut was like.
In high school Hanks developed another passion: acting. No one dreamed when he earned the school “Oscar” for his performance in South Pacific that he would be accepting the real thing twenty years later. Hanks studied theater at a community college in Hayward, California, where he met Vincent Dowling, who was recruiting actors for the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival.
In 1978 Hanks turned in an award-winning performance in the Cleveland production of Two Gentlemen of Verona. Bolstered by success, he headed for New York City with fellow actress Samantha Lewes, whom he’d met in college. 1 heir son, Colin, was born shortly after they arrived. Hanks was the lead in Riverside Shakespeare Theater’s The Mandrake (1979} and snagged a film role in He Knows You’re Alone (1980) before winning ABC’s Talent Development Program award. The prize was a $50,000 TV contract. Hanks played opposite Peter Scolari in Bosom Buddies, a sitcom about aspiring admen who dress in drag to get housing in a women’s residence hall.
After Bosom Buddies was canceled in ] 982, Tom made numerous TV guest appearances. On the set of Happy Days he met Ron Howard, who cast him opposite Daryl Hannah in Splash (1983). The movie positioned Hanks to become a major star. In the next two years he statred in five movies, including The Money Pit and Nothing in Common. Audiences and critics were charmed by the affable young actor.
Tom and Samantha had a second child, Elizabeth, in 1982, but they patted ways a few years later. Hanks next filmed Volunteers, costarring with Rita Wilson. The two hit it off and began dating; in April 1988 they wete married.
