Someone who wins only after making a lot of mistakes, who has a sense of humor.”

While on loan to another production company, Seasonal Films, Jackie Chan became a box-office star. He had a lot of creative input in his first project, the 1978 film Snake in Eagles Shadow. To everyone’s delight, it was a huge hit. Jackie’s second film, Drunken Master, surpassed Snake in Eagle’s Shadow, making Jackie a bona fide celebrity. Soon people were stopping him on the streets asking for his autograph, and he had more money than he had ever dreamed of.
Jackie became one of the biggest stars in Asia and was in great demand. He decided to sign with Golden Harvest because the owners Leonard Ho and Raymond Chow agreed to give Jackie complete creative control over his films. Eventually, Jackie became a star in America too, after the release of the 1994 hit Rumble in the Bronx. Two of his biggest hits in America to date are Rush Hour and Rush Hour II.
Today Jackie has his own production company. With the founding of the JC Group, Jackie has branched out into other businesses, owning real estate and becoming a partner in the restaurant chain Planet Hollywood. He is married and has a teenage son. He rarely sees his family because of all of his traveling and working, but is very protective of their privacy.
Jackie knows he cannot keep making action films forever, though he is still far from retiring. He bas thought about moving on to producing, directing, and teaching. Says Jackie, “I’d like to be the Action Man, the guy that the studios hire to train their directors about screen combat and stunt choreography. I’d like to pass on what I know to the next generation of stars and directors.” With his sense of humor and his ability to create stunts that defy the laws of gravity and human endurance, audiences worldwide will be the beneficiaries for years to come.

Jackie Chan - International Martial Arts Film Star
I don’t do special effects. I don’t do computers. , . . It’s not like Superman, Batman. Everybody can be Superman …. But nobody can be . . . Jackie Chan!
—JACKIE CHAN

On the course of his twenty plus years in film, Jackie Chan’s body has taken a terrible beating. He’s broken several bones in his body, including his jaw, nose, fingers, and one ankle. He calls them hazards of his job—being a stun tin an-action hero. His job has made him an international star and a multimillionaire. Not bad for a kid who grew up poor, uneducated, and without his parents to love and nurture him.
Twelve-pound baby Jackie Chan was born Chan Kong-sang on April 7, 1954, in Hong Kong, China. His parents, Charles and Lee-lee Chan, worked for the French ambassador to Hong Kong—Charles as a cook and handyman, Lee-lee as the housekeeper. The Chans lived with their only son in a small room in the back of the ambassador’s mansion. The mansion was located in a wealthy neighborhood far above crowded downtown Hong Kong. Golden Harvest had a contract with martial arts star Bruce Lee. Chinese-American Lee brought an energy to action films that no one had seen before. He was quick, and fought against many foes at once, instead of the traditional one-on-one encounters. Though his career was brief (he died at age thirty-three of a cerebral edema), Lee’s emergence in Hong Kong cinema forever changed the way action pictures were made.
Jackie left the academy when he turned seventeen, and went to the studio lore looking for work. In those days, the more willing you were to do something dangerous, the more likely you would be hired. Jackie was willing to do just about any kind of stunt needed in a picture. Because of his academy training, Jackie could jump higher, kick harder, and hit faster than many of the other stuntmen. He enjoyed the work but was anxious to be more involved—to coordinate stunts, direct the pictures, and come up with script ideas.
Over the next few years Jackie’s career was like a roller coaster. Work was never steady, and the Hong Kong film industry was in turmoil after Bruce Lee’s death. Every studio tried to find a new star to replace Lee, but no one could fill his shoes. The industry was struggling, and so was Jackie, until he met the man who would change his life—-Willie Chan, He had seen Willie around the studio lots, scouting films for distribution. On a chance meeting at a mutual friend’s wedding, Jackie and Willie spoke briefly. Before parting, Jackie gave Willie his business card.
Not long after the wedding, Willie tracked Jackie down to offer him the lead role in a remake of Bruce Lee’s blockbuster Fists of Fury. Eager to star in his own film, Jackie signed a contract with Lo Wei Productions, a film company owned by millionaire director Lo Wei. The film was a flop, as were the next few pictures. Jackie soon tired of trying to become the “new” Bruce Lee. He had his own style and wanted to bring his originality to the big screen. In his autobiography, I am Jackie Chan, Jackie explains,
“Bruce was Superman, but I think that audiences want to see someone who’s just a man. Like them.
