With one line, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn,” Clark Gable immortalized his role as Rhett Butler in the historic Southern epic Gone With the Wind(GWTW). Ruggedly handsome, manly, and magnetic, Gable was one of the most popular romantic stars Hollywood has ever seen. His brilliant performance in GWTW ensured him legendary star status.
Incredibly, Gable hadn’t sought the part of the Southern gentleman from Charleston who tries to win over the beautiful, but often times insolent, Scarlett O’Hara. “I tried to duck that Rhett assignment, you know. I didn’t want any part of it. . . . Everybody this side of Tibet had read the book, and everybody had different ideas about Rhett, and it was a cinch I couldn’t please everybody,” said Gable. He played the role well enough to earn a Best Actor Academy Award nomination, the third of his young career.
William Clark Gable was born on February 1, 1901, in Gadiz, Ohio, to Adeline and William H. Gable. His father worked as an oil rigger and later as a farmer. When Clark was just seven months old, Adeline died from epilepsy. Clarke’s father remarried, and he was raised by his dad and stepmom, Jennie. The family moved to Rcvcna, Ohio, when Clark was sixteen. He quit school and took a job at an Akron tire factory. After seeing the play The Bird of Paradise at the local theater, Clark decided to become an actor. He kept his day job at the factory but worked for free as a stagehand for several stock companies. On his twenty-first birthday he took a $300 inheritance left to him by his grandfather and joined an acting troupe called the Jewell Players.Clark Gable
After a few months the troupe disbanded, and Clark took odd jobs until he could make it to Portland, Oregon, where he joined another theater troupe. He met actress Josephine Dillon, who began coaching Clark in acting techniques. When she decided to go to Hollywood, Clark went with her. They married in December 1934. He made his first film appearance as an extra in the silent movie Forbidden Paradise. Soon after, he started working under the name Clark Gable.
Gable continued to pick up work in some silent films and onstage. After being seen starring as Killer Mears in the stage production of The Last Mile, Gable was given a screen test. He was rejected because studio producers thought his ears were too big to play a leading man. But agent Minna Wallis (sister of Warner Brothers producer Hal Wallis) managed to get him a part in his first talkie, The Painted Desert (1931).
Metro-Goldwyn-JVlayer (MGM) signed Gable to a two-year contract. For a while Gable was cast mostly in villain and gangster roles. Gable’s performances were powerful enough to make him a star by 1 932. After he complained about playing the same “rough ‘em up” parts, Gable was “disciplined” by being loaned out to Columbia Pictures. His punishment, starring in Frank Capra’s It Happened One Mg/tf (1934), backfired. The film was an enormous hit. It swept the 1934 Academy Awards, and Gable won an Oscar for his performance, as did his costar, Claudctte Golbert.Clark Gable
Gable was now a viable fdm star, and was never loaned out to another studio again. He was cast in a wider range of roles, including an Oscar-nominated performance as Fletcher Christian in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935). Gable said it was one of his favorite films, noting that “it was history, a story about the struggle of real men, without the usual load of cinema romance.” Gable could hardly go out anywhere without being mobbed by adoring funs. He was quite surprised by the reaction and was hard-pressed to explain it.
Though his professional life was soaring, Gable was in the midst of ending his second marriage (his marriage to Dillon had ended in 1 930) to Ria Langham, whom he wed in 1931. While attending a formal Hollywood party, Cable and actress Carole Lombard got reacquainted. They had actually worked together on the film No Man of Her Own in 1932 (the only movie they appeared in together). The two began dating, fell in love, and were married in 1939.Clark Gable
Gable had become a superstar. The adulation of his adoring fans resulted in his being crowned the “King of Hollywood” when he was the overwhelming choice in a poll taken by entertainment readers. Incredibly, Gable almost passed up the opportunity to star in the role that would immortalize him on-screen— as Rhett Butler in the sweeping Civil War epic Gone With the Wind (1939). Years later, during an interview, Gable explained his initial reluctance: “Miss Mitchell had etched him in the minds of millions, each of whom knew exactly how Rhett would look and act. It would be impossible to satisfy them all, or even a majority. I knew that.” He couldn’t have been more wrong. Sixty-three Gable went to the altar two more times, though those who knew him said he mourned Lombard for the rest of his life. In 1955 Gable married Kay SpreckJes. The Misfits was grueling for rhe fifty-nine-year-old who, portraying an aging cowboy, insisted on doing his own stunts. Sadly, shortly after completing the picture, Gable suffered a heart attack and died on November 16,1960. He never knew he had a son, John Clark Gable, who was born on March 20, 1961.
