Lionel, Ethel, and John Barrymore (1878-1954) (1879-1959) (1882-1942)
The legendary “Flying Barrymores” were the most famous of a family of stage actors going back several generations. Ethel was one of the legends of her time, a beautiful and highly talented stage actress. Internationally renowned, she was the woman for whom the term “glamour girl” was coined. Lionel, her older brother, was noted as a consummate character actor; his credits include fifteen “Dr. Kildare” movies and .hateful Mr. Potter in the classic It’s a Wonderful Life (1946). John, the youngest Barrymore, was perhaps the most famous, earning the nickname the “Great Profile” for his striking good looks and dashing demeanor. He became a matinee idol after transforming himself from a Shakespearean stage actor to a film star.
