her has no illusions about fame. “Some years I’m the coolest thing that ever happened, and the next year everyone’s so over me,” she says frankly. Her apparent disregard for public opinion stems from a combination of great success—including an Oscar for Moonstruck (1988)—and widely publicized failure. Deeply loyal to her fans, the resilient, candid actress nonetheless claims to live by one simple rule. “I answer to two people: myself and my God.”

Cherilyn Sarldsian was born in El Centro, California, on May 20, 1946, to Jackie Crouch and John Sarldsian. Jackie, who later changed her name to Georgia Holt, was a struggling actress who has married eight times—three times to Sarldsian. Even in grade school Cher was smitten by the glamour of show business. “I didn’t know what [IJ was going to be; I just wanted to be famous," she says, often practicing her "autograph" and standing in front of a mirror imagining herself onstage. In 1961 Georgia married banket Gilbert La Piere, who adopted Cher and half sister Georgeanne and sent them to a private prep school in Encino, California. Cher adapted to her new situation with flair, entertaining class-mates with her throaty singing voice. She was intelligent and studied hard, but not until she was thirty did Cher discover that she suffers from dyslexia, a learning disorder that makes reading numbers and words difficult.
Cher dropped out of high school at sixteen and left home for Los Angeles. In a coffee shop on Hollywood Boulevard, she met twenty-eight-year-old Salvatore "Sonny" Bono, a junior assistant for record producer Phil Spcctor. Cher was immediately taken with Sonny.

Cher got the break she longed for one day when Spector needed an extra backup singer and tapped her for the job. In 1964 Sonny and Cher performed their own unofficial marriage ceremony in Tijuana, Mexico, and soon after that they launched a professional partnership, hitting the road as "Caesar and Cleo." In 1965 they recorded Sonny's song "I Got You, Babe" under their own names, and it soared to the top of the charts. A string of Top 40 singles followed, including "The Beat Goes On" and "Bang Bang." It wasn't only their music that attracted followers. The pair dressed like hippies, with shaggy hair, bell-bottom pants, wildly patterned tops, fur vests, and knee-length boots.

As a harder kind of rock took hold in the late 1960s, Sonny and Cher’s folksy music slipped out of style. Their movie Good Times (1967) flopped, as did their second film attempt, Chastity (1969). Sonny and Cher were legally married in 1969, and their daughter, Chastity, was born that year. They abandoned their hippie garb for tuxedos and designer gowns and hit the nightclub circuit.
In 1971 CBS programming director Fred Silverman offered them their own weekly variety show. The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour was an instant success and stayed high in the ratings during its three-year run. Off-camera, however, the couple’s marriage was deteriorating. By the show’s second season they were constantly feuding and had begun puhlicly seeing other people. In 1975, after a bitter legal struggle, Sonny and Cher were divorced.
Cher launched a solo variety TV series that year, but by the third episode she felt overwhelmed and asked Sonny to join her professionally. Cher had married—and divorced—rock star Gregg Allman, and their child, Elijah Blue Allman, was born in July 1976. The new Sonny and Cher Show was canceled in August 1977. By 1979 Cher was an out-of-work single mother and decided to turn her attention to acting.
Cher turned in an earnest performance in the 1982 film Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. Hollywood director Mike Nichols was so impressed that he cast her in Silkivood (V)%3). Her strong performance earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination-—and stopped the snickering of doubting movie-industry gossips. For her role in Mask (1985), she shared the Cannes Film Festival Best Actress Award.
Cher had become what one critic called a “media myth,” using her fame and flashy style to her advantage. In 1987 she was signed for three major films: The Witches of Eastwick, Suspect, and Moonstruck. Cher’s childhood dream came true in 1988 when she won a Best Actress Oscar for Moonstruck. After twenty-five years she had at last reached the pinnacle of success.
Cher next decided to renew her singing career and signed with former boyfriend David Geffen’s label, collaborating with artists like Jon Bon Jovi, Michael Bolton, and Richie Sambora. Her new “light metal” sound, coupled with her outrageous outfits, completed her transformation. Between 1987 and 1992 she had eight hit singles, including “If I Could Turn Back Time” and “Heart of Stone.”

By the time she completed the film Mermaids (1990) and a singing tour in 1991, however, Cher was near collapse. She retreated to less grueling projects, such as her commercial endorsements of fitness centers. When she began taping infomerdals for a line of hair-care products and a new ho me-furnishings business she’d started, critics were appalled. Cher was undaunted by the criticism. The work, although hardly prestigious, had given her a chance to rest. She made a comeback m the mid-1990s in a segment of the critically acclaimed HBO special If These Walls Could Talk, which she also directed. She dedicated herself to fundraising for AIDS charities and released a new album, It’s a Man’s World.
Cher was in London in January 1998 when Chastity called with devastating news: Sonny Bono, then a California congressman, had been killed in a skiing accident. A grief-stricken Cher returned to California. Although she and Sonny had traded barbs for years after their divorce, their relationship had warmed, and they’d maintained a special bond. In a tearful eulogy Cher praised Sonny as a good friend, father, and partner. In her memoir she referred to Sonny’s death as “My First Tragedy.”
After coming to terms with Sonny’s death, Cher costarred with veteran fdm actresses Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, and Joan Plowright in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1997 bit Tea With Mussolini. Audiences and critics loved her performance as a flamboyant American socialite visiting Italy under Mussolini’s dictatorship. In 1999 Cher had a Top 40 hit for the first time in twenty-two years with “Strong Enough,” and her 1998 album Believe went platinum four times. She joined top vocalists Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, and Brandy on an album called VH1 Divas Live ‘99.

Cher has cemented her celebrity status in recent years with her usual energetic and varying projects. In 2000 she used the creative freedom afforded by the Internet and released Not.Com.merdal, available only by download. A departure from her usual pop sound, the album includes intensely dark songs—the first she has written entirely by herself. She collected her first Grammy Award, in 2000, for the hit “Believe” and was nominated for two other Grammys, as well as an American Music Award. In 2002 Cher followed up with Living Proof, an album of catchy dance tunes.
Cher’s impact on fdm, music, and pop culture has been debated for years. In a field where novelty brings fame, however, Cher has managed to reinvent herself to meet every new challenge. “You have to figure out. . . creative ways to stay vital, interested, have new dreams,” she says.
